Games, novelties...

Here are some Internet links to game and novelty sites of interest. These are not definitive links, they are merely examples of what can be found.

Around The World In 80 Days... Instructions and tips come along in this game as each level increases the challenge. From this example you can see some of the game play - by swapping tiles to build rows of three identical tiles or longer, a player earns points and bonuses. (In the screen above, swapping an "S" and a "yellow" could make a row of five yellows. Swapping a yellow and "blue" could make a vertical line of four yellows.) When groups are made they disappear, and the tiles above drop down. The game pieces on the board that will make up the jigsaw image on the left must be made to fall through the bottom of the screen (just two in this board). When the jigsaw image is complete, the play advances to the next board.

There is a fair bit of strategy in what you form and remove to get the puzzle pieces to fall through. There is also a clock, and the puzzle must be completed within the alloted time or a life is lost.

The game may need to be purchased to play further than the 17th level, but playing the first 17 is challenge enough for a few days.

As you may recall from the original novel, Fogg thought he had not made it around the world in 80 days, but had taken 81. This game does have an 81st gameboard to complete before you are through.

After completing the game, you can go around again through all the levels. None are exactly the same and the difficulty increases (rocks are added). My present score, after completing the game three times, as of December 22, 2012, is...

(I guess the world didn't end yesterday as it was supposed to.)

Darts

I came across a shockwave dart game online that was kind of neat. I was successful at it, winning 10 games in a row before I tired of it. I used a program called Camstudio to record what I was doing on the screen and eventually turned it into an AVI movie.

Winning the 10th game, avi movie. Unfortunately the file is almost half a gig in size so, instead of downloading the file, maybe you can just take my word for the number of wins :)

Here is a screen pic. I am getting ready to throw my third dart. I did go on to win with a double 13 to reach zero first.

Miniputt

Miniputt is a Shockwave game, a simple, animated graphic arcade game that resembles a miniputt golf course. This game requires the Shockwave player or Shockwave browser plug-in to run. Shockwave is a common plug-in, and Shockwave animations are often found in the content of websites of all kinds, so chances are Shockwave is already installed on your PC.

Visit shockwave.com to see all their other games available, and to learn more about Shockwave products.

Scrabble

This older version of Scrabble (for Windows XP or earlier) still plays well enough to be challenging and entertain. Download the file, run it to unpack the contents and create the needed folders (C:\games\scrabble).

Seek out newer versions to get many more features and updated dictionaries.

Nut Chords

This program can be used to learn chords for a guitar. Once the controls are mastered, a chord can be quickly set up and audibly played in a very life-like guitar sound (hit Enter) for comparison to the sound of a real instrument. Shift and Ctrl will toggle a chord back and forth from the keyboard depiction to the fretboard depiction so the program can actually be helpfl for piano also.

Windows 7 games...

Microsoft has veered off from providing the standard set of games we all have become used to having on our PCs. They seem to think that there is no longer a demand for them.

Au contraire. To get these games back on your Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 PC, visit this site and download Winaero's latest installer for them.

Or, click here to download the April 26, 2016 version of their installer in a ZIP file, with credits. 154 MB.
